High-precision labels for automated medical assembly

Challenge

Intersurgical manufactures life-saving respiratory devices. In this field, a label isn't just a sticker; it's a functional component that must seal joints or mark critical zones.

  • The "Impossible" Spec: The client needed adhesive labels dispensed onto the device with absolute precision. The tolerance allowed was just ±0.1mm (both in web width and label position).
  • The Industry Limit: Standard label manufacturing involves printing followed by slitting. In slitting, the web naturally "drifts" slightly as sensors react to correct it. The typical industry standard is ±1.0mm. For Intersurgical, a 1mm deviation would mean a defective medical product.

Solution

We accepted the challenge by reinventing the finishing process with our proprietary "Zero-Drift" slitting system. Where standard industry machinery allows for a "wandering" tolerance of ±1.0mm, we engineered a rigid web path control that eliminates lateral movement entirely. This allows us to deliver rolls that meet the unforgiving specifications of medical robotics.

Precision standards:

  • Extreme accuracy: Unlike standard reactive systems (±1.0mm), our setup maintains absolute rigidity, allowing us to slit and rewind rolls with a consistent ±0.1mm tolerance.
  • Automated perfection: The ultra-precise rolls allow dispensing robots to run without stops or misplacements on life-saving devices.
  • Dust-free environment: We implemented specialized dust-free cores and enclosed packing procedures to ensure the labels enter the cleanroom in pristine condition.
