Compostable envelope for biodegradable tea bags

Challenge

The global tea market demanded a specific duality: the natural, tactile look of paper combined with the hermetic barrier of plastic.

  • Standard bio-films often feel "plasticky" and cheap.
  • Standard papers lack the barrier to protect delicate tea aromas.

Nasa Corporation, a leading distributor of packing solutions, needed a stable, high-speed compatible material to complete their sustainable portfolio. They required a solution that would allow their premium clients to switch to green packaging without sacrificing shelf appeal or machine speed.

Solution

We engineered a high-performance Paper / NatureFlex™ hybrid. This construction is unique because it bonds a premium paper outer layer (for branding and texture) with an inner NatureFlex™ cellulose layer (for sealing and barrier). By utilizing a water-based adhesive lamination process, we created a structure that mimics the hermetic functionality of plastic while remaining fully bio-based and breathable.

Why this solution works:

  • Hybrid bio-engineering: Unlike standard laminates, both layers are derived from renewable wood pulp, offering the premium texture of paper with the functional barrier of cellulose film.
  • Compostable structure: The main components are fully biodegradable and processed using water-based inks and adhesives, aligning with the principles of organic packaging.
  • Strategic synergy: Enabled Nasa Corporation to supply a complete "Eco-System": biodegradable mesh + tag + envelope made of compostable materials.
