Ultra-removable labels for thin bioplastic bags

Challenge

Plasta is a giant in the polyethylene recycling sector, producing millions of garbage bag rolls for major retailers and private labels. The trend towards sustainability has led to down-gauging (making bags thinner, often just 7 microns) and using bioplastics.

  • The "Adhesion Paradox": The label must have strong initial tack to survive the high-speed winding machine and remain on the shelf (not curling or falling off).
  • The User Failure: However, when the consumer tries to peel that label off at home, standard adhesives are too strong. They pull the delicate plastic with them, tearing the first bag and rendering the roll "defective" before it's even used.

Solution

We developed a technically precise ultra-removable label solution specifically for delicate films. The challenge was balancing two opposing forces: the label needed high initial tack to survive the production line, but near-zero removal force to protect the 7-micron bag. We achieved this through advanced adhesive chemistry and zonal application.

Adhesive engineering:

  • Smart-release chemistry: We utilized a specialized "High-Tack / Low-Peel" adhesive. It bonds instantly on the production line but "releases" easily when pulled by hand.
  • Zonal gumming: For the most sensitive lines, we apply adhesive only in strips, leaving the "lift tab" completely dry to prevent scratching the 7-micron bag.
  • Material harmony: We utilized FSC-certified paper faces, enabling Plasta to maintain a consistent "Green Story" from the recycled bag to the sustainable label.
